It is compulsory to register in Germany. You will have to register within two weeks, as soon as you have a permanent residence in the city. This is also important for creating a bank account and being permitted to work.
You have to register at your local registration office, or “Einwohnermeldeamt” . You should bring:
-An ID oder Passport
– The rental contract containing addresss of the apartment, the name and address of the landlord and the tenant
– Some money, for example in Hamburg, there is an administrative fee of 6 Euros.
– Filled out form, which can be downloaded from the website of the respective office
You should possess an ID, since it is compulsory in Germany. To apply for an ID at the local registration office, you need a biometric id photo and about 25 Euros to pay the first ID.
Next to the Passport, the ID has to be renewed as well every few years in Germany!
